Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips
Astilbes require moist, highly organic soils. Adding cotton burr compost or manure to the soil at the time of planting will greatly improve conditions necessary for Astilbe to flourish. Because of our hot summers, Astilbes grow better in medium to light shade. If moisture levels are sufficient, they will actually take quite a bit of sun.
The flower buds are just as attractive as the bloom, and then as the flower fades, the stalks dry in place leaving textural interest for weeks to come. The foliage adds a nice component to coarse textured plants like Hosta and Brunnera.
Astilbes are deer and rabbit resistant. Cut them back in spring so the dead foliage serves as a mulch and protects the buds for next year. Though hardy to Zone 4, there is no sense taking a chance on them not blooming their best.
